A Cheeky Seagull Takes Flight at Turner Contemporary

Yesterday was a special day for the Beyond Words community, as we proudly launched our joyful new book, A Cheeky Seagull, at the iconic Turner Contemporary in Margate.

Surrounded by sea views and soaring creativity, it was the perfect setting to introduce this vibrant, accessible story that celebrates friendship, adventures, and understanding.

What’s the story?

A Cheeky Seagull follows a sunny day out in a seaside town, where a feathery encounter with a daring seagull turns into an opportunity for connection and laughter. As with all Beyond Words books, the story is told entirely through pictures, making it accessible for people who find it easier to understand images than words—including those with learning disabilities, autistic people, and anyone developing literacy or English language skills.

Created with and for people with lived experience, this book invites readers to explore the joy, curiosity, and occasional chaos of real-life social experiences. Whether you’re navigating social situations, discovering a new environment, or just enjoying a good giggle, there’s something here for everyone.

Created by our community

This book is special not only because of its charming story, but also because of the people who brought it to life. A Cheeky Seagull was co-authored by members of the Deal and Folkestone Beyond Words Book Clubs, two vibrant groups of storytellers, readers, and thinkers who meet regularly to explore stories through images and shared experience. Both clubs are hosted and supported by Kent Libraries, who also joined us at the launch to celebrate the project’s success.

Their creativity, insight, and lived experience shaped every page of the book, making it a true reflection of community voice and inclusive collaboration. Lucy Bergonzi is the talented artist who took the ideas and made them real in this beautiful book.

A launch full of energy and heart

The launch event at Turner Contemporary brought together Book Club members, contributors, artists, and readers to celebrate the book’s release. Attendees had the chance to explore the artwork, meet some of the creative minds behind the project, and take part in interactive activities created by Deaf Friends Beyond Words Bok Club, capturing the fun and spirit of the story.

We were thrilled to be joined at the launch by the Mayor of Margate, Councillor Katie Pope, who warmly welcomed guests and celebrated the importance of inclusive storytelling in building understanding and connection across communities. Her presence marked the significance of the occasion—not just for the people involved in making the book, but for everyone who believes in making art and literature accessible to all.

We were especially proud to highlight the inclusive, co-produced nature of A Cheeky Seagull. As always, Beyond Words books are made with, not just for, the people who read them. That means every scene and character is shaped by real experiences, insights, and feedback.

Why it matters

Access to storytelling and emotional literacy shouldn’t be limited by language. Our books open up conversations around everyday life, relationships, and wellbeing in a way that’s visual, direct, and deeply human. With A Cheeky Seagull, we continue our mission to create spaces where everyone can see themselves, connect with others, and be understood.
