Beyond Words Celebrates 100th Book Club in a Box!

We're thrilled to announce a heartwarming milestone: the launch of our 100th Book Club in a Box! This is an exciting moment in our mission to make books more accessible and meaningful for people with learning disabilities across the UK.

Thanks to a wonderful partnership with Shared Reading and Derby Libraries, our 100th box has landed at Mickleover Library in Derbyshire, where a brand-new Beyond Words Book Club is ready to begin its journey.

📚 What’s in a Book Club in a Box?
Each free starter pack includes:

  • 30 of our award-winning word-free books

  • A How-To Guide to get started

  • Promotional materials and training resources

These beautifully illustrated books are crafted to spark conversation, encourage shared experiences, and build community—especially for those who find it easier to understand pictures than words.

“Beyond Words Book Clubs are so important because they give people with learning disabilities a way to enjoy stories, make friends and feel part of something special while having fun,” says Catherine Mitchell from Derby Libraries. “We are really excited that the group at Mickleover will be the 100th Beyond Words ‘Book Club in a Box’ and we can’t wait to celebrate.”

💬 Why This Matters
The need is real. According to Mencap:

  • 82% of people with learning disabilities feel lonely

  • 1 in 3 young people with learning disabilities spend less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday

Our Book Clubs are about more than just stories—they’re about connection, inclusion, and belonging.

💡 Making it Happen
A huge thank you to the National Lottery Community Fund, whose £350,000 grant in 2024 helped us scale this work nationwide. With their support, we’re on track to launch 300 Book Clubs across England by 2026.

🎙️ Professor Sheila the Baroness Hollins, Founder Chair of Beyond Words, shares:

“We are thrilled to have reached this important milestone. With each box we can reach more people with learning disabilities, empowering them to make sense of their experiences and connect with others.”
